Custom Fitted Golf Clubs

Hanukkah and Christmas are speeding toward us like a putt on Augusta's greens. I know one gift golf aficionados will appreciate—clubs from Colorado-based Dimension Z. What makes these clubs particularly special is how they are precision-crafted

“With mass produced golf clubs the companies are shooting six-, seven- and eight-irons down the assembly line and putting them into a box,” said Don Ingermann, CEO of Dimension Z Golf. “There’s no uniformity in those club sets. The balance points, swing weights, grip weights and shaft flexes are completely different.”

A stickler for perfection.

Believing that imperfections in most factory built club sets contribute to poorly executed golf shots, Ingermann, former president of the Ben Hogan Company, set his mind to crafting clubs engineered to exacting measures.

“When I get a box of one hundred shafts, I test each one on my diagnostic machine,” explained Ingermann. “I’ll get a variation between three-and-a-half to four pounds from the weakest shaft to the strongest shaft—in a box where all one hundred are supposed to have exactly the same flex. I reject the shafts that don’t have the neutrality I require.”

The club maker’s tolerance is a mere five tenths of a pound, which leads him to return as many as 30 percent of a manufacturer’s shafts.

The machine doesn’t lie.

I watched as Ingermann placed each iron in my bag of steel-shafted name brand irons on his testing device, a machine that basically rotates the shaft looking to find its neutral point. To my surprise NONE of the shafts were matched. Accordingly, each club has a mind of its own, meaning at impact the club head will strike the ball, sending it perhaps right, left or maybe down the middle.

“Flaws built into mass produced clubs make the golfer compensate by creating nine different swings with each golf club and he or she is supposed to remember which club does what every time and it doesn’t work,” Ingermann commented.

Proper fitting is key.

If you haven’t been fitted for clubs it really is an eye opening experience. Yes, the brand name clubs engineer very forgiving clubs but there really is no substitute for custom fitting.

“In precision golf club fitting we know that if we don’t get the proper length, grip size, loft and shaft flex we can alter where your shots are going,” Ingermann added. “Neutrality creates consistency and we want those club faces as neutral as possible at impact.”

A custom built club or set of clubs sure would look great under the tree. Check out Dimension Z’s full line at www.dimensionz.com.
