Wedges Worth A Look.
Phil Mickelson may be the only guy skilled enough to consistently hit that flop shot for which he is so well known, but a wedge from EIDOLON might just give the rest of us a fighting chance. The company, founded in 2004 by Terry Koehler and friend Ralph Thompson, is keen on making wedges that are designed to shave strokes.
"We've raised the bar on custom-built wedges to a level other brands don't approach," says Koehler. "The result is that every EIDOLON golfer gets a precision set of scoring tools that will cut strokes from their scores from the very first round. We guarantee that."
Better Scoring via the V-SOLE.
Thompson, who also founded Reid Lockhart Golf shortly after Koehler left the Ben Hogan Company in 1996 paired his knowledge with Koehler, whose been awarded five patents for golf clubs, landing on the player-friendly designs. Rather than confusing the xgolfer with a mind-boggling array of specialized bounce angles, EIDOLON's patented V-SOLE can handle any kind of lie players might encounter.
In short, the design combines a low bounce in the primary part of the sole with a high bounce on the leading 1⁄4” of the sole to make each EIDOLON wedge versatile enough to handle any lie your ball might find. No matter whether your ball finds a tight lie or a fluffy one, firm turf or soft, fairway or rough, etc., your V-SOLE will be able to handle it.
Individually Milled Grooves = More Control.
By individually CNC (computer numerical control) milling the faces and each groove on the faces the wedges basically perform really well. This level of precision allows the wedges to push the USGA Rules to the limits while remaining compliant. The benefit to the golfer is more control over the ball in the short game in part through improved spin rates.
"This is going to be a big year for wedges with the grooves changing for 2011,” adds Koehler. “But to just randomly buy one off-the-rack wedge from a major brand is going to leave the golfer disappointed. If you're going to make the investment, make sure your wedges fit you and your game."
Buy One or Buy Them All.
There are four V-SOLE wedges in the line—the 48-degree pitching wedge, 52-degree gap wedge, 56-degree sand wedge and 60-degree lob wedge. The pitching wedge gives golfers true pitching-wedge distance, and is perfect for chipping and knock-down shots. This scoring tool can be altered to any loft from 47-50 degrees to ensure the right set match.
The gap wedge, which can be altered to lofts from 51-54 degrees, can be hooded down for pitch and runs without the leading edge digging in or laid open for easier long bunker shots. The sand wedge's V-SOLE technology ensures handling a tight lie by a cart path as deftly as a fluffy bunker shot. It can be altered to lofts from 55-58 degrees. The lob wedge is a great short-range bunker club, and perfect for delicate pitches and chips where more spin and height is needed. It can be altered from 59-62 degrees.
Wedges retail between $129 and $139 depending on finish. Check ‘em out online at www.BestWedge.com.
