Native American dances, ancient ruins enrich Santa Fe golf vacation.

Native American dances, ancient ruins enrich Santa Fe golf vacation.

Watching a Corn Dance at the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo near Santa Fe gives me a better understanding of why the state of New Mexico has “Land of Enchantment” on its license plates.

In a gathering of more than 200 tribal members, the Corn Dance is performed as a blessing of the fields and is one of many annual celebrations that occur at New Mexico’s 19 pueblos.

The ritual...

Black Mesa—Part Two: Big fun in New Mexico’s high desert.

Black Mesa—Part Two: Big fun in New Mexico’s high desert.

On a recent road trip from Colorado to New Mexico, Santa Fe was programmed into the Garmin. While visiting I added a new course to my list of layouts with the “wow factor” you come home telling your golf buddies about—Black Mesa.

Though its elevation at 5,400 feet isn’t nearly that of Colorado’s Copper Creek (9,712 feet), Telluride’s course...

Black Mesa a “must play” on your Santa Fe road trip.

Black Mesa a “must play” on your Santa Fe road trip.

In the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, heroine Croft (Angelina Jolie) is simultaneously gorgeous and punishing; curvaceous and cunning; graceful and bedeviling.

As I navigate Black Mesa, a tribal public course just north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, I find myself assigning the same Croft-esque characteristics to the tough yet forgiving layout.

Woven into the high desert landscape within the Santa Clara Pueblo, one of the Eight Northern Pueblos in New Mexico, Black Mesa reflects the handiwork of course architect Baxter Spann of the firm Finger, Dye, Spann based in Houston, Texas.

Penny Parker Open helps raise money for breast cancer patients.

I’m standing on the tee box on Hole 11 at Inverness Golf Club in Englewood hoping there is a hole-in-one in my future. That is because 30 feet to my right is a new BMW 3 Series convertible, which if I hit my ball 175-yards over a lake, onto the uphill sloping green and into the cup, is mine. According to Golf Digest the odds of me doing so are 12,750 to 1.

I take one more look at the Beemer, then address the ball and send it on. The ball clears the lake, bounces once just below the green and continues rolling towards the pin. Jimmy Buffet’s song

Golf Along the Vietnam Ho Chi Minh Trail

 Dear Reader,

I just received a press release announcing that Budget, Vietnam’s only international standard car rental brand, is now the official ground provider of the world’s most exotic and talked-about golf adventure: the Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail.

The press release also included a good and succinct description of golf along the Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail, which I’ve included below. As many regular readers may recall, Rocky Mountain Golf did a feature of golfing in Vietnam in our spring/summer 2008 issue.

---------------------------------------

The Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail launched in July 2007 as the region’s first coherent, comprehensive golfing itinerary. It pairs first-class clubs with some of the most...

Angel Cabrera Returns Home

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Masters winner Angel Cabrera showed off the newest addition to his wardrobe for the admiring hometown crowd that welcomed him back to Argentina.

"Green suits me," Cabrera said on Tuesday, smiling and sporting the Masters jacket he earned as the first champion from South America.

Two days after winning the Masters on the second hole of a three-way playoff at Augusta, Georgia, the man nicknamed El Pato (The Duck) arrived in his hometown of Villa Allende in the province of Cordoba in north-central Argentina to a rousing welcome.

Cabrera also won the 2007 U.S. Open, joining South Africa's Gary...

Neither Phil Mickelson nor Tiger Woods won the Masters, but their epic final-round match won't be forgotten

Neither Phil Mickelson nor Tiger Woods won the Masters, but their epic final-round match won't be forgotten

What were the chances? What were the odds that Tiger Woods, the best golfer in the world, and Phil Mickelson, Tiger's wildly entertaining Salieri, would both wind up in the same twosome, with the same score as they began a gorgeous Sunday afternoon with the course playing just soft enough that making up seven shots was in the realm of the possible?

Think about it: Phil has Tiger's old coach, Butch Harmon, working with him these days. Butch had Phil nice and loose as he went through a beautiful warmup session on Masters Sunday.

Harmon took in Ian Poulter's all-white getup and said, "If I dressed like that, people would be looking to buy ice cream from me." Tiger, in his warmup, hit a series of hooks and pushes, and his teacher, Hank Haney, was looking...

Tiger and Lefty show comes up short at Masters

AUGUSTA, Georgia (AFP) — Neither Tiger Woods nor Phil Mickelson won, but both left Augusta National with their heads held high after putting on a show Sunday that brought the roars back to the Masters.

The world's two top players stepped out together for the seventh time in a major tournament with both knowing they had to produce fireworks if they were to claw back the seven strokes that separated them from co-leaders Kenny Perry and Angel Cabrera.

For most of what turned out to be an enthralling day, they looked set fair to do just that.

Mickelson lit the fire with a record-equalling outward nine of 30 and Woods fed the flames with a superb eagle at the eighth as he reached the turn in 33.

The Augusta faithful flocked to the sides of world number one...

Eagle Ranch Golf Course Opens

EAGLE, Colorado — Sure, Eagle Ranch has been around since 2001 and is no longer the “new kid on the block” when it comes to golf courses.

But here’s the way Jeff Boyer, the course’s director of golf operations, really knows this to be true.

“I used to be able to get away without predicting when opening day was,” Boyer said. “The phone wouldn’t start ringing until the golf course was already open. Now I can’t go anywhere without people asking me.”

Eagle Ranch is finally open, so please leave the nice man alone. After a few false starts, season No. 9 at the Arnold Palmer-designed course is starts today.

Eagle Ranch can be excruciatingly long for the sadistic at 7,530 yards,...

Hamilton Plays With Masters Purpose

Todd Hamilton loves the Masters, loves Augusta National Golf Club, and his annual April visit. He knows if he wants to return in 2010, rounds like Friday’s 70 are just what his needs.

Playing on the final-year of his five-year Masters exemption for winning the 2004 British Open, Hamilton put together his second solid round for a six-under-par 138 total, three back of early second-round leader Chad Campbell.

“I was just happy to have a chance knowing this could be my last one and I wanted to play like it wasn’t going to be my last one,” Hamilton said. “I wanted to have a chance to come back.”

He was even par at the turn after finishing the first round three shots behind Campbell’s lead....

Campbell's Record Start Leads Masters

Campbell's Record Start Leads Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Chad Campbell figures that somewhere along the way he has probably made five birdies in a row before on the PGA Tour. He just can't remember the time or place.

Rest assured that this time he won't forget when and where it happened.

Campbell started with birdies on the first five holes at Augusta National Golf Club – an opening string unparalleled in Masters’ history Thursday – and went on to shoot 65. At 7-under-par, he’s the leader by one stroke after the opening round.

Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan are at 66, followed by Larry Mize, the 1987 Masters champion, and Shingo Katayama of Japan at 67.

Campbell made the turn in five-under-par 31 and nearly matched his opening run by adding...
