Lana’i’s “Po'okela” Par 3s.

Lana’i’s “Po'okela” Par 3s.

Appreciating that March is Colorado’s snowiest month—averaging 11.7 inches—and April on average piles on another nine inches or more, it may be a good time to book a golf trip to Hawaii. If you’re seeking a smaller island with fewer tourists, head to Lana’i, who’s two Four Seasons Resorts, are poised to wow guests.

Two fantastic courses—The Experience at Koele and The Challenge at Manele, designed by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus respectively—feature four of the po'okela (best) par 3s in the Hawaiian Island chain. Doug Stephenson, PGA, Director of Golf, weighs in on how to play these...

Golf Shot—nifty iPhone app.

If you own a SkyCaddie, Callaway uPro or Garmin Approach G5 stop reading—you’ve already spent your $275 to $450 on a golf GPS device. (Okay, maybe you economized and plunked down $80 for an IZZO Swami). If you haven’t yet jumped on the GPS golf cart—and you own an iPhone—take a look at Golf Shot.

“Golf Shot GPS can be downloaded from the iTunes store onto your iPhone for $29.99,” said Bowen Osborn, Vice President of Corporate Development/Marketing for...

Kaua’i’s “Po'okela” Par 3s.

Kaua’i’s “Po'okela” Par 3s.

Given that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Groundhog Day, golf in the Rockies may not happen ‘til April!  I thought I’d inspire a visit to Kaua’i. If you’re a malihini (tourist) teeing up on the Garden Isle for the first time, here are some tips to keep you from getting into pilikia (trouble) when playing some of the po'okela (best) par 3s on the island.

You may want to say a pule (prayer) so Laamaomao, god of winds, provides you with kokua (assistance) in keeping the trade winds from taking your ball off course. I asked golf pros who are kama’aina (well acquainted) with their courses to share a...

Colorado hosts 2010 PGA tourney.

As so many I was bummed when after a long run at Castle Pines Golf Club The International left the PGA Tour schedule in 2007. Over 21 years, 38 countries were represented in a tourney won by Retief Goosen, Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els to name a few. So when the announcement was made at a recent press conference that the 71st Senior PGA Championship was coming to Colorado, the electricity in the room was huge.

Holiday gifts—Miura Christmas.

With just a few days left until the big guy in the red suit squeezes down the chimney, you still have time to brighten somebody’s holiday by giving them a recently released golf club—a Precious Edition hybrid from Miura Golf.

Like all Miura clubs, the new hybrids are custom crafted and individually manufactured, using a carbon plate on the crown to create a low center gravity in the head. The mid/high trajectory with mid/low spin and a slight draw bias virtually guarantees reliable “down the middle” shots.

Greatness by degree.

Holiday gifts—Turn on the Cuisinart.

It is impossible to overlook the fact that Santa is, well, rotund. Clearly all those centuries of eating cookies on Christmas Eve and throughout his early Christmas morning delivery schedule have added up.

To mix things up in the calories department perhaps Mrs. Klaus—and whomever you give this gift to—ought to consider the recipes found in The Club Menu: Signature Dishes from America’s Premier Golf Clubs.

128 pages of culinary bliss.

Printed in hardcover, the 128-page book was authored by Jon Rizzi...

Holiday gifts—Heavy Putter.

If you’re thinking of asking Kris Kringle for a way to erase strokes, drop this hint—a Heavy Putter from Boccieri Golf. Heavier than other putter brands, the Heavy Putter features Boccieri Golf 's proprietary innovative weighting system. With its heavier mass head and counter balanced weight in the grip end of the shaft, the putter improves stroke consistency by forcing the body to use larger muscles for a pendulum-like stroke.

Holiday gifts—Let it glow!

If you’re looking to light up more than the Christmas tree this holiday, give the gift of illuminated golf apparel. Headquartered in Sonoma, California, Loudmouth Golf was founded by Scott Woodworth, who isn’t shy about trumpeting the virtues of his zany slacks on YouTube.

“You can tell a lot about a person when they react to the pants,” said Woodworth, who helms the company with CEO Larry Jackson. “Some guys look straight down with tight lips as they walk by, then mutter something to their partner. You probably wouldn't want to hang out with guys like that. Then there's the instant smile and recognition reaction,...

Holiday gifts—Dimension Z clubs.

Hanukkah and Christmas are speeding toward us like a putt on Augusta's greens. I know one gift golf aficionados will appreciate—clubs from Colorado-based Dimension Z. What makes these clubs particularly special is how they are precision-crafted

“With mass produced golf clubs the companies are shooting six-, seven- and eight-irons down the assembly line and putting them into a box,” said Don Ingermann, CEO of Dimension Z Golf. “There’s no uniformity in those club sets. The balance points, swing weights, grip weights...
