Colorado’s 10 Best Par 3s—Resort.

Par 3s are spoilers. In June's LPGA State Farm Classic Michelle Wie double-bogeyed the par-3 17th en route to a 5-over-par 77 in the third round. A three-putt triple bogey on Sunday at the 232-yard par-3 third plummeted David Duval to one over par at the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. I asked golf pros from resort Colorado golf courses to share one of their most...

Dressed for the 9’s.

At first glance golf shop or clothing store apparel has “cookie cutter” sameness in styles, colors and fabrics. But a closer study can reveal a lot about quality and craftsmanship.

So what should you look for when selecting shirts or slacks?

“Fabric is really the foundation for any piece, whether it is a golf shirt, a sport coat or pair of trousers,” said Andy Bell, President, House of Carrington golf apparel line. “We are using the best fabrics we can.”

Hunt wins by four.

When Rob Hunt’s second shot on the par 4, 452-yard 18th plunked down two feet from the flag, it spoke volumes about the style of play that resulted in his winning the 2009 Colorado PGA Professional Championship. Hitting a high arc to carry the pond, Hunt dropped his ball on the elevated green, leaving an easy roll in for a birdie—one of six he carded during his third round.

The PGA pro at The Links at Highlands Ranch bested Tray Shehee and Matt Schalk, who each finished at 10-under to tie for second place. Four players, Eric Bradley, Tad Holloway, Perry Holmes and Caine Fitzgerald came in at 6-under.

Hunt atop the leaderboard.

Round one leader Jeff Carlson allowed Colorado National Golf Club to get the best of him. After firing a 66 in his opening round of the 2009 Colorado PGA Professional Championship, Carlson shot a 76 on Tuesday, dropping him into a tie for 13th going into the final round.

Rob Hunt, the tourney’s current leader, shot back-to-back 67s, giving him a 10-under, two-stroke lead over Dale Smilgelsky. He holds a three-stroke advantage over Matt Schalk and Jason Brandt.

Hunt, PGA pro at The Links at Highlands Ranch, has made the cut in each of the six events he’s played, scoring an average of 72.56...

Woods wins BMW.

On Sunday, Tiger Woods left the rest of the PGA Tour guys in the rear view mirror. Shooting a three-under 68, he won the BMW Championship by eight strokes. His win at Cog Hill allowed him to hoist the J.K. Wadley Cup for the fifth time (he also won in ’97, ’99, ’03 and ’07).

The victory gave Tiger 71 wins on the PGA Tour, meaning he is only two back of Jack Nicklaus, though still 11 behind Sam Snead. On Saturday, Woods scorched Cog Hill with a 62—setting a course record.

I was hoping that Woods, Furyk, Mickelson,...

Colorado PGA pros compete.

After shooting an opening round 66, Jeff Carlson held a one-stroke lead over Tad Holloway in the 2009 Colorado PGA Professional Championship. Carlson, PGA pro at Cherry Creek Country Club, was seven under going into today’s second round.

The 54-hole stroke play event, which is being played in Erie at The Colorado National Golf Club (formerly Vista Ridge), will determine the best player in the Colorado PGA.

Carlson, playing TaylorMade sticks, used his red-hot Yes! Golf putter, a Donna model, to drain key putts and give him a one-stroke advantage over Tad Holloway (Rifle Creek Golf Course), who carded a 67 on Monday. Three...

Clothing with charisma.

I grew up reading classics like Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, Mark Twain’s Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and The Hound of the Baskervilles, written by Conan Doyle. Each author brought their words to life by through intriguing characters and inventive plots.

In the spirit of those engaging novels, brothers Andy and Tim Bell launched their House of Carrington golf apparel line, relying on—not coincidently—the lives of two brothers from British society and an American debutante to enrich their story. The result is clothing that is as...

BMW Championship revs up.

In June I played in the Penny Parker Open a tournament at Colorado’s Inverness Golf Club hosted by Denver Post columnist, Penny Parker. The charity event raised $25,000 for Sense of Security. SOS assists Colorado-based breast cancer patients in better managing their finances, which are often strained by medical costs associated with fighting the disease. You can donate by clicking here.

Colorado’s 10 Best Par 3s—Public.

Think par 3s are easy? At the 2009 Masters the par-3, 240-yard fourth hole garnered 34 bogeys and one double bogey. In the final-round of the 2009 RICOH Women's British Open eventual winner Catriona Matthew carded a bogey on the opening hole, a 199-yard, par 3. In rounds one and two of the 2009 British Open, Tim Clark bogeyed the par 3, 231-yard sixth hole, Sergio Garcia bogeyed it Friday and Saturday, and Padraig Harrington bogeyed it on Sunday. Santa Fe’s best green chile burgers.

I’m two bites into a Blake’s Lot-a-burger green chile cheeseburger and the experience is heavenly. Opened first in Albuquerque in 1952 by Blake Chanslor, the fast food emporium is a New Mexico institution. My wife and I made a point of stopping at Lot-a-burger on our golf road trip to play Black Mesa and Towa, a pair of terrific tribal land courses.
